Case Study on RFID Application for Library Management
Background & Challenges
Our client was a city library catering to diverse communities. They faced challenges in efficiently managing its extensive collection of books and multimedia resources and facilitating a smooth visitor/reader experience. Manual book checkouts, labor-intensive processes, and lengthy queues at the librarian's desk were causing inefficiencies and affecting the overall operations with higher costs and visitor dissatisfaction.
Our Approach
-
Identified pain points in the existing library management system
-
Replaced existing labels on each book and multi-media item with RFID labels which contained unique ID codes and basic information such as book name. author name, and genres. The tags also have dual chips and are equipped with anti-theft functions
-
Made NFC-enabled cards available for library members
-
Placed RFID readers at check in/out stations, added self check in/out and anti-theft detection at entrances.
Results
-
Resulted in a 25% reduction in operational costs related to manual checkouts and inventory management
-
Moreover, overdue items are reduced by 35%, and check in/out times are slashed by 52% on average
-
The capability of our RFID products significantly deterred unauthorized removal of books from the library premises with such incidents going down to a level near zero
